How to qualify a Chinese chip alternative in six gates
A practical workflow for qualifying a second-source semiconductor without confusing similar specifications with drop-in compatibility.
1. Establish the exact target PN
Record the full manufacturer part number, package, temperature grade, memory or tolerance suffix, application, annual quantity and the failure that triggered the search. A family name alone is not enough.
2. Classify the proposed relationship
Start with REF unless evidence supports more. FUNC means the function can be reproduced with design changes. PIN means the package and pinout align but firmware or configuration changes remain. P2P requires documented pin and software compatibility.
3. Compare absolute limits and operating conditions
Check supply range, current, temperature, package dimensions, timing, analogue performance and protection behaviour. Compare the parameters that matter in the actual circuit, not only headline specifications.
4. Read migration and errata evidence
Prefer manufacturer migration guides, compatibility notes, official cross-reference databases and current datasheets. Part-number similarity is a discovery signal, not compatibility evidence.
5. Validate samples in the real application
Run bring-up, boundary tests, thermal tests, programming and production-test coverage. For firmware-bearing devices, test clocks, peripherals, boot paths and low-power behaviour.
6. Release through controlled procurement
Approve the exact manufacturer PN and package, define incoming inspection and traceability requirements, confirm lot code and CoC expectations, and keep the original evidence with the approved vendor record.
